Digital subscriber line or DSL, as it is more commonly know, is a high-speed connection to the Internet using traditional phone lines. DSL uses fairly new technology. It has only been available since 1998 and is still not available in all locations. In order to receive the fastest connection, you have to be close to the central office of the telephone company. A special modem is required to access DSL, but the DSL provider usually gives this to the subscriber. The service allows you to leave your computer connected to the Internet, while still receiving phone calls. The connection is much faster than traditional modem service. Out of town people in small towns are too far away from their phone companies and therefore cannot receive the benefits of having DSL. However, as phone companies technology improves DSL will move to outlying areas. There is also xDSL, which offers different varieties, such as RADSL, HDSL, and ADSL.
